Q: Why are we going so slow?  I know we just started the program, but wouldn't I LOSE WEIGHT FASTER if I ate less and did more cardio?

A:  This is probably the question I get most often from new clients, but as my grandfather always said:  "Slower pace wins the race."    Whether you have 10 lbs to lose or 100, once you put your body in caloric deficit, eventually it assumes that you are starving, so it slows your metabolism to preserve energy and ensure your survival. This is known as "adaptation" or in layman's terms, "hitting a plateau."

Although there are plenty of unscrupulous snake oil salesmen who will promise that their 8 day detox, secret potion, or magic protocol will help you lose 10 pounds in a week (or whatever amount and time frame they pull out of thin air), this is not only unhealthy, but most likely, un-doable. The truth is that any idiot can put you on a 1300 calorie/1 hour of cardio a day program and you'll lose weight quickly. At first. 
But what happens when you plateau? Where do you go from there? 1100 calories and 90 minutes? 900 and 2 hours? Pretty soon you are literally starving and seriously damaging your metabolism, which will make it more difficult to lose weight in the future.Additionally, most people get discouraged by the plateau and quit before reaching their target weight. And worst of all, as soon as you get back to your normal eating habits, what happens? You gain back all your weight and more. This is exactly what yo-yo dieting entails, and what my programs do not.Commencing your fat-loss program slowly with minimum caloric restriction and cardio is sustainable (unlike crash diets you can't stick to) because you don't go from feast to famine over night and it allows for a lot of leeway in overcoming inevitable plateaus with small tweaks.Most importantly, a gradual pace gives you an opportunity to break bad habits and acquire new, healthy ones that you can continue long after your diet is over, because as you know, diets don't work. #itsnotadietitsalifestyle
